Sir – I was surprised and then angered to hear the news story that Bicester Town station was to be renamed Bicester Village.

I then read the Chiltern Railways' advert in the Bicester Advertiser, that in a poll conducted by Wavelength Insight (who are they?), 49 per cent of residents were in favour of a change of name and 72 per cent agreed the name Bicester Village would reduce traffic.

Can anyone tell me just exactly where this poll was conducted? Because as a resident and substantial ratepayer of Bicester, no one asked me. Nor for that matter has anyone one I know, nor anyone they know, been asked if they favoured a change of name to Bicester Village. Exactly just who made this decision? We must be told.

In the aforementioned advert we are also led to believe the change of name would be less confusing for those wishing to visit Bicester Village, in choosing the right station. In today’s Google age, surely potential visitors do their research first before they leave home. Thousands of Chinese people travel from the other side of the globe every year to visit Bicester Village and they seem to be able to find it okay.

I could go on and on, on the subject of ‘what did Bicester Village do for us’, but I think the most sensible thing to do (something sadly lacking these days among those in seats of power) would be to retain the name Bicester Town. Then add "Alight here for Bicester Village Retail Centre".
