RUGBY UNION: Alchester upset the odds with super win
11:00am Thursday 19th December 2013 in Rugby
Alchester upset Southern Counties North promotion hopefuls Aylesbury with a 7-3 home success, despite having Joe McEneaney sent off.
Aylesbury had won their last ten matches, but could not overcome a stubborn defence.
Lock McEneaney received a second yellow card ten minutes from time, but his side held on.
The first half saw Aylesbury’s Andy Hackett plus Alchester new signing John Connaughton and McEneaney sin-binned.
Connaughton made amends by scoring Alchester’s only try, which fly half Tom Miles converted. Miles also missed three kicks in front of goal in the windy conditions.
James Woodfall slotted a second-half penalty for Aylesbury and hit a post with another attempt.
Bicester’s good form in the BB&O Premier Division continued with a 15-9 derby victory at Gosford All Blacks.
Gosford took the lead with a penalty from Tim Ellis, but Bicester replied with a penalty try after home fly half Bill Smith prevented the ball being played by the visiting pack.
Will Hammond missed the conversion and Ellis’s second penalty made it 6-5 at half-time.
Ellis struck again to increase Gosford’s lead.
But Bicester flanker Niall Morrow’s try made it 10-9 before scrum half Mike Harris fed captain Dan Spencer to score in the corner.
