CAMERON Brannagan has no problem sacrificing his attacking instincts to help out Oxford United during the run-in.
The 21-year-old signed in January with a reputation as a box-to-box midfielder, but has had little chance to show it so far.
After an ankle injury delayed his debut until last month, Brannagan has been mainly used by new head coach Karl Robinson in a role sitting just in front of the back four.
While it is not his natural position, the former Liverpool youngster is happy to pitch in while United attempt to secure their Sky Bet League One security.
He said: “At times it’s a bit frustrating, because all the way through my career I’ve always been going forward, creating and scoring.
“But if the manager wants me to play at left back I’ll do it – that’s how I’ve always been.
“When I was at Liverpool for the last couple of months I played there anyway.
“I’m quite disciplined so it doesn’t matter. My one-versus-one defending can get a bit better, but apart from that I don’t mind it.”
While Brannagan signed with hopes of helping United mount a push for the play-offs in the second season, the reality has been very different.
But the midfielder remains confident they will pick up the points required to stay up during the run-in.
He said: “I don’t want to jinx it, but I’m sure it’s coming.
“We’re one or two wins away from getting to where we need to be.
“We just need to stick together and keep working.”
