Former BBC weatherman Bill Giles will bowl the first wood at the official opening of a new £70,000 all-weather four-rink bowling green at Oakley on August 1.

The noon unveiling will coincide with an open day, where local bowlers can try out the green for free.

There will also be a short mat laid out in the village hall to enable visitors to try their hand at bowls, plus a bar and barbecue.

Funding for the project has come from WREN, a not for profit organisation, who awarded £50,000 and the Aylesbury Vale Community Chest (£20,000).

Oakley Bowling Club’s Frank Ashurst said: “It is fantastic that WREN and Aylesbury Vale can make funds like these available and I am delighted our project was selected.

“We are looking forward to playing on our new green for many years to come.”

Meanwhile, Bicester’s woes in Division 1 continued as they crashed to a 6-0 defeat against title-chasers Headington A in the Oxfordshire League, sponsored by Bridle Insurance.

Jason King and Nick Rea-Welsh did the damage for Headington.
