BICESTER Town claimed a dramatic first win of the season as they came from two goals down in the closing stages to beat Chalfont Wasps 3-2, writes Tom St John.

After opening the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division One East campaign with a goalless draw against Finchampstead, Town looked in trouble before a comeback in the final ten minutes.

The hosts led 1-0 at the break and they extended the lead just after the hour mark despite having JP Jamil sent off for retaliation.

But Bicester staged an impressive late rally, scoring three times in six minutes through substitutes Lee Prpa and Leo Brooks, before Danny Bone grabbed the winner.

The result was hugely significant, as it marked the club’s first victory after returning from a four-year absence.

Joint manager Eddie Nix was delighted with his team’s determination.

He said: “It shows we’ve got the right attitude, commitment and fitness levels.

“We were very unfortunate to be 2-0 down I thought, and we needed something to galvanise us.

“That came from a massive tackle by Jason Prpa.

“It’s funny what can raise your spirits as a footballer, and that tackle did the job.

“As a manager it’s so pleasing to see your substitutions pay off.

“Our important players really came through for us and the spine of the team was spot on.

“The lads are buzzing for the next game now.”

Town are back in action on Saturday against Rayners Lane at Ardley’s Playing Fields (3).
