Ardley United avenged last season’s defeat by Ascot United in the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup final with a 2-0 victory in this year’s decider at Didcot Town’s Loop Meadow Stadium on Monday.

The two clubs’ finishing positions in the Premier Division suggested that Ascot were favourites, and with Ardley having only two substitutes they were clearly struggling for numbers yet again.

Ardley dominated from the off and scored from their first real chance after 15 minutes.

Kieran Scott won the ball and ran across the 18-yard line.

He exchanged passes with Luke Ingram, seeing his shot take a slight deflection off a defender’s heel before flying past a static Chris Grace in the Ascot goal.

Jon Gardner and Ingram went close as Ardley kept up the pressure.

Five minutes before the break, Ardley keeper Jack Harding made a good save from Damien Markman’s ferocious shot.

Ascot’s Daryl McLean broke into the penalty area from the left wing in the 58th minute and gave the Ardley defence some nervous moments before clearing their lines.

Ardley kept up their grip and doubled the lead on 67 minutes.

Gardner won possession in midfield before picking out Ingram, who outpaced the defence before firing across Grace and into the net off the far post.

Ascot’s substitutes did little to change the pattern of the game and Ardley held on comfortably to pick up the trophy to end the season on a high note.
