'First class' Oxford United beat the odds

Bicester Advertiser: James Constable wraps up the scoring at Cheltenham James Constable wraps up the scoring at Cheltenham

Chris Wilder hailed the “first class” attitude of his players as a patched-up Oxford United came from behind to beat Cheltenham Town.

The U’s trailed 1-0 and 2-1, but a stirring second-half display saw them triumph 4-2 to book their pace in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area quarter- finals.

Injuries meant the visitors had to throw an unfamiliar side together, but they gelled quickly in a lively game.

Wilder was delighted to see Harry Worley, Peter Leven and Andy Whing all gain useful pitch time, while James Constable ended an eight-month goal drought.

But for the United boss, the most encouraging sign was the way the team set about their task.

He said: “It’s been a great night for us and there were lots of positives to come out of it.

“First of all was the attitude and application of the players. I think a sign of what teams are about is how they apply themselves when games like this come about.

“I thought they were absolutely first class.

“The crowd was down, but those players showed a desire to go and get a win.

“They were behind twice but came out to win a good game.”

After strikes from Tom Craddock and Worley, Constable put United 3-2 in front 19 minutes from time with a superb angled finish on his left foot.

The striker was delighted to end a barren run which had stretched back 21 games.

He said: “It was nice to get on the scoresheet.

“I had a feeling the defender was going to hesitate, and luckily for me the goalkeeper stayed on his line and gave me the chance to get a strike on target.”

After losing six league games in a row last month, this victory against Cheltenham, wrapped up by Peter Leven from the penalty spot, made it three good results in the last eight days.

United still have a lengthy injury list, but after a win against AFC Wimbledon and a draw with Gillingham, they have regained some momentum.

Wilder added: “It’s been a difficult period and we’re not over it yet.

“We’ve got to keep on churning out results and performances, but that’s three in a row against three decent sides, so I can only take great heart from that.”

Ok - yes a decent win in a tin pot cup game&4 goals including a rare one from JC but and you know there's always a but - where does this performance put Wilder's constant moaning about injuries? He can't have it both ways.A scratch side beats a decent side on their own ground. If we replicate this performance against Port Vale and then go on a long winning league run I will gladly salute Wilder. If however we regress into inconsistency random wins then my criticism will remain.

Luck at present appears to be Wilder's greatest companion so I hope it hangs around till the end of the season.

any win very welcome ,the non importance of the competition was reflected in the very poor attendance but should not detract from the performance in coming back from being behind twice and scoring four times away from home.maybe abit early to say it but perhaps we have turned the corner and when at full strength will be a force in div two egain.

Great win. Bored of people moaning now! We know the situation. Looks like we have turned a corner. Nice to see players getting time on the pitch. Peter Lev getting 90mins, JC 90mins, Worley 90mins. Nice to Whing back on the pitch. Lets all get behind the lads and keep this little run going for a lot longer then the run of defeats!

I said earlier in the week Beano cannot score sitting on the bench. Play him and he will deliver.

Big Ox - I'm bored of same pattern of performances but like you I'd be more than happy to see us go one a decent winning run and until that happens I'll still be sceptical of Wilder. Promotion is a must this season and there are no excuses. We have players that are good enough (sometimes this is questionable) we just need consistency and flexible management when plans go wrong.

Eatmygoal you did say that and hats off for getting it right ;-)

Always great to win, especially away from home. The result was a total suprise when you bear in mind the way we have been playing. Let's hope we can reproduce this in our League games.

Confidence plays a greater part at League 2 level. It really showed when we were losing as skills disappeared, concentration went and bad decisions were made all over the pitch. When we played Cheltenham last year their confidence levels were sky high and they won comprehensively at our place. I'm no fan of the JPT but this was a big win at the rght time and could herald a new phase to our season.

Before we get carried away by this result, in all honesty the Cheltenham defence was really poor. Luckily the Cheltenham manager waited until they were 4-2 down before he put on the artillery. The result would perhaps have been a lot different had these players played from the start. Still, a win is a win in any competition.
It is encouraging that Beano is back on the score sheet again. Also, with Leven and Worley getting back into their strides, and Whing getting some match time, we may indeed be turning the corner.
Luckily we have time on our side to get more players fit before next weeks game gainst Port Vale. If we can carve out a result on monday, we will be back in contention again.

Adlibber I'm fed up of your negative comments on here, are you another Swindon Troll? Great win for the lads, lets keep it going, those of you that spout negativity on here need to come to the matches & realise what support is really about, a couple of weeks ago the fan's positivity turned us round the corner at the kassam & the negative fans were forced out of the stadium for their own safety, just a shame people can hide behind these forums under a fake name & get away with it, if you expressed your views in the stadium you;d be lucky to leave with your teeth still in your small head.

Every game is important and it is good to see us going on a run in one oe the cups.
Playing cup games can only be good for the team. The players are good enough to beat anyone in this league. We just need a manager to step up to the plate and take us forward.
Could you be the man Chris?
