OXFORD United's wait for a point in Sky Bet League Two goes on as two players with connections to the club were on target to give Mansfield Town victory.

Former United midfielder Adam Murray bagged the winner two minutes from time as a poor game sparked into life late on.

It sunk the visitors, who had looked set to pinch the game after Danny Hylton came off the bench to score for the second game running.

His penalty cancelled out Mansfield's opener, scored in the first half by Ryan Tafazolli, who went on tour to the USA while on trial at United two summers ago.

Michael Appleton made two changes from the side which started Tuesday's Capital One Cup win at Bristol City.

George Long replaced Max Crocombe in goal, while Michael Collins came in for Josh Ruffels, who was fit enough to be among the substitutes.

The U's were hoping to pick up where they left off at Ashton Gate, but did not get going in a first half desperately low on quality and notable incidents.

Mansfield worked hard to limit the visitors' time on the ball and when they won possession back, they were very direct.

Both defences dealt with what was thrown at them with few problems.

It took a mistake to create the first chance, on 18 minutes.

Long made a mess of bowling the ball out from the edge of the box, presenting it straight to Ritchie Sutton.

United were relieved it did not go to a more attack-minded player, as the centre back rushed his lob, which did not threaten the goal.

On the half hour mark a clever flick-on from Chris Clements teed up Sam Clucas, whose looped finish was just off target.

The dour stalemate was broken six minutes before the break.

Long got fingertips to an excellent free-kick from Clements, diverting the ball on to the inside of the post, where it bounced back across goal for Tafazolli to head in.

Falling behind briefly stirred a reaction from United before the break.

Carlton Morris, often an isolated presence up front, was picked out by a David Hunt throw and the striker's shot on the turn was parried by goalkeeper Sascha Studer at the near post.

United had work to do at the break, but their arrears were almost extended on the stroke of half-time, when Tafazolli headed narrowly wide from a Clements free-kick.

The visitors were sent out early for the second half, but it got no better for them when play restarted.

A careless back pass from Jake Wright almost put Long in trouble, but Clucas was unable to capitalise.

The striker fared better just before the hour mark, when he cut inside and curled a shot just wide.

United desperately needed some inspiration and Appleton looked to his bench for a spark.

Alex Jakubiak came on for his debut and instantly the visitors carried more of a threat.

But it was only after Hylton was introduced in the final quarter of an hour that they caused Mansfield problems.

Just two minutes after coming on, the striker latched on to an excellent threaded pass from Michael Collins.

Hylton shielded the ball well and lured Tafazolli into a lunge, conceding a penalty.

United's No 10 dusted himself down and although Studer dived the same way, the ball found the corner of the net.

Buoyed by the goal, the visitors went in search of a winner in the final ten minutes.

Jakubiak headed a decent chance over, while Brown had a shot well saved.

They looked the more likely to score, but two minutes from the end of normal time Mansfield grabbed the winner.

A cross to the back post was not cleared and no-one tracked Murray, who ran on to the loose ball and fired a low shot past Long.

It was the decisive moment and ensures United, who visit Morecambe on Tuesday, are one of five teams in League Two yet to get off the mark.

Oxford Utd: G Long, Hunt (Jakubiak 60), Mullins, Wright, Newey, Collins, Meades (Ruffels 71), Riley, Potter (Hylton 76), Brown, Morris.

Unused subs: Crocombe, Raynes, Rose, O'Dowda.

Mansfield: Studer, Sutton, Dempster (c), Tafazolli, Beevers, Taylor, Clements (F Bell 85), McGuire (Murray 85) Heslop, Fisher (Palmer 68), Clucas.

Unused subs: A Bell, Jones, Marsden, Thomas.

Referee: Richard Clark (Northumberland).

Attendance: 3,042 (405 visitors).

Just back from the match, as I live in the Midlands, and it is difficult to describe how shocking we were. Appleton may say it is work in progress but against a poor Mansfield we had no midfield and no threat up front whatsoever until Hylton came on late in the game.

This performance was worse than the second half last Saturday and how Newey remained on the pitch for the whole match today, only the manager will know, because his passing was abysmal and put the defence in trouble on a number of occasions.

We are in trouble if things do not change soon.

We all know that we need a good experienced striker and a real mid field engine. The worry must be that we have gone from one of the strongest defences in the league, to total collapse since last Easter. Even though our best defender. Mullins, is back in the team.

We are truly poor. We easy beat Mansfield away last year and today get beat with an Ex Oxford player getting the winning goal. Our team is playing worse since Wilder has gone. That 4 -1 away win at Pompey last year is a distant memory. Unless we get a decent midfield and a really decent goal scorer it is bottom 6 for us. Loan players just do not cut it. Very disappointing. Is Appleton a talker or a doer as it is a results industry football. Disappointed Tubbs went to AFC Wimbledon as he would have been mustard for us and will get 25 goals + and will be the best striker in this poor division. After 15 games we will know where we are heading. So far 2 losses from 2. No end product.

Yet again no chances created, therefore no goals again. It is going to be a long hard season with us struggling to stay in the Football League. THE NEW REGIME must invest as a matter of urgency, and not in untried youngsters but in a couple of experienced midfielders and inject some pace up front. Unfortunately most clubs have now sorted out their squads for the season and all that will be left are the dregs. It seems the wage budget is set at Conference level and the way we are going that is where we will finish.

Appleton fast becoming a man with more words than tactical nous. His record at his previous clubs isn't exactly glowing and yes it is early days but he needs to address the slide quickly. What worries me more is the new board who have promised much yet delivered nothing. Loan players are not the answer and if the new regime don't invest now we'll be a non league club next season. We don't need Wilder or Beano we need new players and we need them now.

Funny I said all of these things about the team you are all saying after the Bournemouth game. The fact that we offered nothing up front etc, and we don't have much to look forward to this season and you all said I was talking rubbish, some were quite rude, well I guess you are all starting to see what I could see weeks ago. We are weak in midfield and have no really good strikers, and the goal keeper Long well mistake after mistake.so unless the new owners stop talking a good game and start buying we will be saying all the same things in May.

We are only 2 games in! no real need to panic... Yet anyway! I have been reading lots of comments about Tom Newey well... i have been living in Grimsby for the last 10 years surrounded by Grimsby and Scunthorpe fans for who Newey has played for and when i informed both sets of fans that Newey signed for Oxford last year i was welcomed with laughter. Grimsby fans have a very special hatred for Newey as many different fans have told me he is one of the worst players to ever where a Grimsby shirt. after the summer with all the players released on a free why keep this? best defence in the league? im sure Newey will do his best to insure we will not have the best defence in the league.

I think you need to change your bedsit in Swindon and perhaps move into a Hostel where you can learn to interact with other humans. You're a tedious Swindon bore devoid of humour and vocabulary.

Got to be honest hasn't been the best start to the season and not the start I was expecting. I am still sure that these guys are going to be good for the club! We need to stick behind them and hope that all the negative fans are eating their words at the end of the season. We haven't been thumped in any game so I'm not panicing, judge him after 10 games not 3.. Let's be a little bit positive guys come on..
