OXFORD United have signed highly-rated goalkeeper George Long on loan from Sheffield United until January.

The 20-year-old will compete with Max Crocombe for a starting place while U’s No 1 Ryan Clarke recovers from foot surgery.

Despite his age, Long arrives with a promising CV which includes 75 appearances for the Blades in the last two seasons.

It includes a 3-0 win in an FA Cup third round at the Kassam Stadium in January 2013.

He has also been a regular in England squads from under 16 upwards and last season was selected several times by Gareth Southgate for the under 21 squad.

U’s head coach Michael Appleton said: "George is very highly-rated and has been part of the England set-up so we are very excited to have him here.

"He is tall, he communicates well and likes to command his box.

“We need competition for every place in the side and with Ryan Clarke still on crutches we now have two good young keepers in George and Max Crocombe who will push each other all the way.”

It was initially hoped Clarke would only miss the opening month of the season, but Appleton admitted this week the 32-year-old could be out of action until late November.

I feel sorry for Max. He hasn't done a lot wrong when given the chance but it's clear Long hasn't been loaned with his pedigree to warm the bench.

Max is highly-rated and will get his chance one day, but he is still very raw. He needs to improve his kicking quite a bit in my opinion, but hopefully that can be worked and improved on.

Long is a quality young keeper and there is talk of him being a future England goalkeeper if he fulfills his potential. If we can help him achieve that, then its a win-win. He's got experience at a higher level and although Max has, as you say, done no wrong, but if we can bring in someone who is an improvement on what we have available - and it certainly seems that we have in this case - then this is a good thing. Given his parent club's desire for him to go out and get experience, I doubt he will be costing us much in terms of wages and budget, so still leaves plenty free to bring in some (hopefully) quality attacking options.

There is rumour is Dickson Etuhu is about to sign, but I would back that up and say that is a very unsubstantiated rumour and personally think it is highly unlikely (although given our history of signing players with a history of injuries, it could be true).

Well if it's on Wikipedia, it must be true.

Saw that, however Wikipedia is susceptible to rogue entries from time-to-time especially at this time of year when rumours are taken as gospel. He may well have signed, although I find it very doubtful - the club would have announced it the second he had signed the contract.

Very good signing. Have we got anyone that can score the odd goal yet?

It was tongue in cheek. I more than aware of Wikis' legitimacy. At least whoever edited this page did a better job compared to the last rumour.
