ABINGDON’S Eddie Pepperell produced a superb display to record a top-six finish in Sweden this weekend.

But the Frilford Heath ace, who went into yesterday’s final round in Malmo as joint leader with Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, was left to reflect on what might have been.

Birdies at the third and sixth holes saw the 23-year-old challenging at the top of the leaderboard.

But a number of missed putts proved crucial when coming home, and saw him forced to take sixth spot with 13 under par and pocket almost £37,000.

Thongchai Jaidee beat Victor Dubuisson and Stephen Gallacher in a play-off after the trio finished on 16-under-par.

“I am obviously disappointed I haven’t won because I had a great opportunity to, but feel I did all I could,” Pepperell said.

“My putting let me down on the back nine, I just couldn’t make a birdie.”

Pepperell needed an eagle three at the final hole to make the play-off, but went into the water and shot a bogey six.

“It was right on the limit for me, but I had to give it a go because an eagle would have got me in the play-off,” he said.
