Assistant picture editor Ed Nix takes his pick of the week’s best photographs and tells us why he reckons they make the grade

A really cracking reportage shot here (above) at the Larkmead School remembrance evening in Abingdon by Damian Halliwell. We have Larkmead students Maisie Harris wearing a horse’s head and friends Kalina Ova and Tyrese Gayle having a good laugh at her. It’s the long lens focusing and the laughter that makes this a great shot

What a lucky chap our freelance photographer Andrew Walmsley was to get a perfect rainbow over the war memorial in Didcot on Remembrance Sunday. The result is a stunning image

This is my favourite of the week. Jon Lewis took this picture of Councillor Mick Haines, who has successfully campaigned for these lights to be installed at the Croft Rd recreation ground. Jon was sent in the daytime so the lights were off. He’s used his remote flash and underexposed to create this dramatic contrast image. Good work Jon

I bumped into a zebra at the office and nearly fell over. Then I remembered it was Children In Need! This picture was taken by Neil Braggins of our lovely Oxford Mail advertising team and has to be included in our pictures of the week

Bicester Advertiser:

This lovely colourful shot from Damian Halliwell of Lizzy McBain was one of those jobs where there weren’t a great deal of props. Here Damian created a really nice picture by diving head first into some of the costumes, with Lizzy doing the same

This picture made me chuckle. Jon Lewis took a great selection of images from the Shrek the Musical photocall at the Oxford Castle. All of the shots were big smiles and fun poses, then I saw this shot. Here they are, all with sad faces posed up having their mugshots taken before they’re thrown in the cells.
