A REPLICA of a 1,500-year-old treasure will be toured around county schools and elderly groups.
The seventh century gold and garden “Hanney brooch” was discovered in West Hanney, near Wantage, in 2009.
It was found with the skeleton of a women in her 20s and was immediately recognised as an item of national and international importance. After going on display at Woodstock’s Oxfordshire Museum the original is now in storage at Oxfordshire County Council’s Museums Resource Centre in Standlake.
So the council commissioned Virginia Tite, a silversmith from Oxford’s Jewellery and Silver Society, to make a replica of the Anglo-Saxon treasure.
The council’s museums service learning and access team will now include the brooch amongst artefacts set to tour the county.
