Changes to law on covert investigation techniques 'won't affect county council'

OXON: Changes to the law on councils using covert investigation techniques will not affect Oxfordshire County Council’s methods, councillors have been reassured.

Under new additions the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA), the Government is seeking to regulate the use of certain techniques by authorities.

Safer and stronger communities scrutiny committee chairman Lawrie Stratford said: “I think it’s reassuring we haven’t had to change our processes.”

Which techniques?
Is this something people should be bothered about, or not?
This article is singularly lacking in information about what exactly this is about - come on OM, surely you can do better than this in informing the publc.

It means the council won't have to change their practices because they already don't do the things that are about to be prohibited (using anti-terrorism legislation to monitor people putting bins out at the wrong time and suchlike). It's a non story.
