Inter Milan claimed a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in a Serie A game overshadowed by a video assistant referee controversy.

Fiorentina hit the post early on through Kevin Mirallas, but they fell behind on the stroke of half-time when Antonio Candreva’s cross struck the arm of Vitor Hugo.

The defender was extremely unfortunate as he had little hope of getting out of the way of Candreva’s cross from a yard away.

But the incident was reviewed by VAR and, after a penalty was awarded, Mauro Icardi made no mistake for his first league goal of the season from the penalty spot.

Fiorentina were level eight minutes after the break when Federico Chiesa’s 20-yard shot deflected off Milan Skriniar and wrongfooted Samir Handanovic in the Inter goal.

Chiesa went close again for Fiorentina and the visitors looked the more likely winners.

But Inter claimed a second successive league win 13 minutes from time when Danilo D’Ambrosio strode through and finished confidently after playing a one-two with Icardi.
