A SCHOOL is celebrating becoming double national champions at the home of cricket.

Abingdon’s St Helen and St Katharine scooped two categories at the ECB Indoor Cricket National Finals, held at Lord’s.

The Under-13 and Under-15 sides progressed through both the county and regional rounds undefeated, to make it to London.

At Lord’s, the Under-13s set 94 to win against Kent’s Ashford School, who fell just two short, before a ruthless bowling performance against Sedbergh School, of Cumbria.

A tie with Ipswich School followed, who were then beaten by Ashford in the final round of fixtures.

It left St Helen’s in a position where victory against The Island Free School (Isle of Wight) would be enough to secure the title.

The Abingdon side was set 92 to win and despite losing two of their top three batters early on, St Helen’s got over the line with five balls remaining, and finished as the only unbeaten side and outright winners.

The Under-15s beat Derbyshire’s Repton School in their opener, setting 96 to which Repton fell seven runs short.

Stamford School (Lincolnshire) and Cardiff’s Cathedral School Llandaff were then beaten prior to the final clash against St Swithun’s (Hampshire).

After some nervous bowling, St Helen’s were set 96 to win, and thanks to strong contributions from the lower order, did so with five balls left.
