A RISING star has won a national competition, adding to the success he has had at county level this season.
Jack Lindsay, competing under Abingdon AC, won his event at the National Primary and Year 7 Cross Country Finals.
Lindsay won the Year 4 Combined Boys and Girls race in a time of six minutes and 46 seconds, edging out Rugby and Northampton’s Rex Nicklin by a single second.
After the event at Prestwold Hall in Leicestershire, the youngster’s mum, Lucy, said: “Jack started the race conservatively, running steadily up the hill from the starting gun and positioning himself in the top third of the field.
“He ran strongly around the first small loop through the woods, working his way up to 10th position.
“From there, he worked hard to close the gap between him and the front four runners, eventually drawing level with the leader.
“The two athletes ran away from the rest of the field and were neck and neck for the majority of the race.
“Jack stayed on the shoulder of the lead athlete and kicked for the line with 40m to go, outsprinting him to take a very well-earned win.
“He executed excellent race tactics throughout and was delighted to be crowned Year 4 National Primary Schools cross country champion.”
The talented youngster has also won all five races in the Oxfordshire Cross Country League this season in the Under-9 age group and was the county champion.
