KARL Robinson says Oxford United are targeting another new centre back after Luke McNally completed his move to Burnley yesterday.

The Irish defender, 22, joined the Sky Bet Championship outfit for an undisclosed fee, reportedly in the region of £2million, agreeing a four-year deal.

McNally’s exit means Elliott Moore, John Mousinho and Ciaron Brown are United’s only senior centre backs.

The latter only signed on Sunday, but Robinson hinted at an arrival from overseas as he looks to bolster his options at the heart of defence.

“We want to bring one more in and have three really established central defenders, with John Mousinho and James Golding, and knowing Longy (Sam Long) can fit in there,” the U’s head coach said.

“We knew Luke was going, so we needed two.

“We’re close to getting one done, we’ve just got to wait for somebody else in another part of the world to get their window to reopen.

“There are one or two complications we’ve hit just through the type of deal that it is, but we’re quite confident we’ll get that one done.

“We’ll keep our cards close to our chest as we always do, because he’s not my player.”

Robinson previously suggested he would switch between three and four at the back next season, having played a 3-4-1-2 formation several times last term.

But the U’s boss revealed McNally’s departure may have changed those plans.

He said: “This looks like now maybe more of a four, if he was to stay it would have been a three.”
