MANCHESTER City opened up a slender lead over Oxford United at the top of the table last weekend.

The two clubs have not been in the same division since 1997/98, but they are fighting it out in a different kind of league this year.

Before last weekend, City and United were the joint-highest scorers in the top four divisions of English football in 2021.

Just counting regular league matches – so not including the U’s three goals against Blackpool in last season’s Sky Bet League One play-off semi-finals – both sides had found the net 61 times.

But City’s 1-0 win at Leicester City in the Premier League moved them ahead of United, who drew 0-0 with Wycombe Wanderers.

It must be said the Premier League champions have played ten fewer games, 24 to 34.

The U's remain the highest scorers in the English Football League (EFL), one ahead of Sky Bet Championship side Peterborough United.

The number of matches in the EFL means it dominates the top of the standings, while nine of the 11 highest-scoring teams have spent at least part of 2021 in League One.

Below Peterborough sit fourth-placed Sunderland, with 57, and Hull City on 55.

Championship side Queens Park Rangers join Morecambe on 51, while Cambridge United and MK Dons have both scored 50 and Lincoln City have bagged 49, the same as Rochdale.
