JAMES Constable will not be returning to Banbury United next season.

The 36-year-old was assistant coach to former Oxford United teammate Andy Whing alongside his playing duties, but felt he could not dedicate enough time to the club in the coming campaign.

U's legend Constable made nine appearances before the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central season was stopped last November due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He helped the Puritans equal their best Emirates FA Cup performance, reaching the first round where they lost to Canvey Island.

But a new job, recent move and a young family meant Constable decided to step away.

He said: “It’s been a pleasure to work and play for Banbury over the last 12 months, working with Whingy again was an easy decision.

"It's such a shame the season was cut short, but the memories from the FA Cup run will stay with me forever.

"I want to take this opportunity to thank all the players and staff, the chairman and directors, the wonderful volunteers and the great Puritans fans.

"I wish Andy and all the players the best of luck next season and hope it’s another season to remember."

Whing, who is now searching for a new assistant, added: "I'd like to thank James for his time at the club.

"He was an integral part on and off the pitch and will be missed.

"I had the pleasure of playing alongside James who had a fantastic playing career and wish him and his family all the best in the future."

Constable is Oxford United's second-highest scorer, with 106 goals.
