KARL Robinson says it is a real achievement for Oxford United and Portsmouth to take their play-off challenge down to the wire.

The U’s are seventh in Sky Bet League One, a point and a place behind the south coast side heading into the final game of the season on Sunday.

It means United could beat Burton Albion and still see their campaign end if Pompey win at home to Accrington Stanley.

Three points at the Kassam Stadium would take their tally to 74, enough to finish in the top six every season since 2009/10.

But Robinson knows how impressive it would be for Portsmouth to reach 75, having beaten them on penalties in last July’s play-off semi-finals.

Both sides had a quick turnaround before the current campaign began in September and the U’s head coach is proud to have challenged again.

He said: “That (74 points) has been enough for many years, sometimes 72 is enough.

“We’ve got 70-plus points, whatever anybody else does.

“If we end up winning and 74 isn’t enough you’ve got to tip your hat to the teams who are above you.

“Portsmouth and us were the only teams who were playing to the back end of last season and we’re still going strong.

“We’ve sold players, we’ve had to rebuild and we’ve had difficult times.”

As well as hoping to better Portsmouth’s result this weekend, United could also be following the fortunes of two more teams around them.

They are three points behind Blackpool and three ahead of Charlton Athletic, who fulfil their final games in hand this evening.

Neil Critchley’s men host Doncaster Rovers, while the Addicks are at home to fourth-placed Lincoln City.

A defeat for Blackpool and a draw for Charlton would keep those sides in the fight for fifth and sixth, setting up a grandstand final day.

Robinson said: “If Blackpool don’t win and there’s four of us for two spots, it’s going to be a great ding dong on the Sunday.”
