DAN Agyei credits his newfound consistency to extra work on both the physical and mental side of the game.

The Oxford United forward has impressed on several occasions over the last two months, despite many of his appearances coming as a substitute.

It followed a month out of the side after a disappointing performance against Fleetwood Town on January 30.

Agyei has been working with the U’s club psychotherapist Gary Bloom alongside honing his technical qualities and is pleased to see it paying off.

“It has really benefitted me mentally,” the 23-year-old said.

“I’m doing a bit of work with Gary Bloom and some extra training as well.

“That helps me in certain situations and gives me more clarity about what I need to do on the pitch.

“It’s working so far.

“The mental side of the game is probably the biggest part.

“It’s fine margins, it’s something I’ve looked at before.

“Gary has been really helpful.”

Agyei was publicly criticised by U’s head coach Karl Robinson for his display against Fleetwood.

The ex-Burnley striker was not ready to be substituted on, then passed up a simple goalscoring chance minutes later.

Agyei is honest about what was a difficult experience, but feels it helped him return stronger.

He said: “From when I was dropped after Fleetwood, it has been my most consistent period.

“Hopefully that continues to the end of the season.

“I was affected by it, but I worked harder at my game.

“There were parts of my game that needed improvement and I used that time out of the team to really improve on those areas.”

Karl Robinson: Oxford United would join EFL social media boycott

Agyei has been a real threat from the moment he returned to the fold against MK Dons on February 27, when he provided the assist for Elliot Lee’s last-ditch equaliser.

He scored United’s crucial second goal in the derby victory at Swindon Town on March 9 and, while he has not found the net since, the striker has caused plenty of problems for opposition defences.

Agyei has been limited to just three starts since his return to the squad, but Robinson is thrilled with his progress – and warned of more to come.

“He deserves a lot of credit,” the U’s boss said.

“He could be a big player for this football club moving forward.

“There’s very few with his power, pace and unpredictability, he needs to develop aspects of his game to make him better.

“He’s a real challenge for the opposition when he comes on the football pitch.”
