NIALL McWilliams has played down expectations of an imminent announcement regarding Oxford United’s stadium situation.

U’s chairman Sumrith ‘Tiger’ Thanakarnjanasuth told BBC Radio Oxford’s Five Minute Fans’ Forum last week that he hoped to have some news by the end of the year.

It comes as United’s Indonesian investors continue talks to secure the majority stake in the club, while a YouTube video showing plans for a new stadium was recently published and quickly deleted.

McWilliams, appearing on this week’s Five Minute Fans’ Forum, admitted he had not seen the clip, but confirmed no site had been chosen.

“I don’t really want to put a time limit on it, it’s a difficult, complex process,” the U’s managing director said.

“At this moment in time there are no definitive plans for any specific locations.”

He added: “It would be remiss of us not to be planning ahead.

“We’ve always said a new stadium or a better financial arrangement at the Kassam would be beneficial to us, so it’s always something uppermost in shareholders’ minds.”

McWilliams did reveal United are budgeting on having 50 per cent capacity at the Kassam Stadium, with no away fans, at the start of 2021/22.

There are also provisional plans to have supporters inside the ground if the U’s reach the Sky Bet League One play-offs this season, with sporting venues allowed to operate at 25 per cent capacity from May 17 – the week of the semi-finals.

The MD also revealed United are hoping to have a club shop back in the city centre, after their Covered Market store closed in March 2020.

The U’s are also aiming to announce season ticket details for 2021/22 in the next few weeks.

McWilliams said: “We’re conscious we don’t know what division we’ll be in or where we are with crowds.

“We don’t want to be unfair to people and have to backtrack on season-ticket prices or pandemic promises.”
