AFTER celebrating the 35th anniversary of Oxford United's Milk Cup win this week, it is only right we travel back to the 1980s for a classic clash against Plymouth Argyle.
Just like the present day, the U's were targeting promotion from the third tier - although in March 1984 they were the division's runaway leaders.
Oxford Mail sports reporter James Roberts takes you through the state of play going into the visit of Argyle and what the result meant for United.
The U's had already enjoyed an excellent season, reaching the fifth round of both the FA Cup and League Cup - beating Newcastle United, Leeds United and Manchester United in the latter.
They had not lost a home league game until ten days before they faced Argyle and this impressive record was a large reason for their position in the Division Three table.
That continued against Plymouth, and then some, as Jim Smith's side continued their march towards the title.
It was only the start of their success.
United: Hardwick, Hinshelwood, Todd, Shotton, McDonald, Hebberd, Brock, Jones, Rhoades-Brown, Vinter, Biggins. Sub: Phillips.
