OXFORD United may not find out if opponents who postponed fixtures due to coronavirus are punished.

The English Football League (EFL) has completed investigations into some games that were called off because of the virus earlier this season, but will not release the outcomes publicly.

It means United might not be told whether sanctions will be handed out to the four clubs who postponed fixtures against them because of Covid – Doncaster Rovers, Bristol Rovers, Swindon Town and, on two occasions, Crewe Alexandra.

The U’s have not been notified whether the latter two teams have been punished for calling off fixtures in October, due to the investigations focusing on the opposition.

But an EFL spokesman confirmed several clubs across the three divisions have been told the initial findings of its inquiries.

He said: “The investigation process regarding the circumstances that caused a series of EFL match postponements earlier in the 2020/21 season is now reaching a conclusion and the proposed decisions have been shared with those clubs who were unable to fulfil their fixtures.

“In accordance with EFL regulations, it has been agreed that these decisions will not be published more widely than to all member clubs as we seek to highlight throughout the competition the consequences of breaches in Covid-19 protocols so it can assist in driving compliance moving forwards.

“As we continue to reiterate, adherence to the matchday and non-matchday protocols by clubs is the single biggest way we can collectively mitigate against the spread of the virus and ensure the health and well-being of managers, players and others associated with the staging of professional football matches.”

This week, Grimsby Town became the first club to be fined for breaking coronavirus rules, which led to three games being postponed back in September.

Although the EFL did not announce the decision through its own channels, the Sky Bet League Two side revealed on Tuesday they had accepted a £4,800 fine, suspended until June 30.

The Mariners were found to have broken social distancing rules at their training ground after midfielder Jock Curran tested positive for Covid and the whole squad was forced to self-isolate.

However, they will not be fined if there is no further breach of protocols.

Meanwhile, the EFL has released the final results of last week’s mandatory round of testing across its three divisions.

A further 531 players and staff from six clubs were swabbed later than the rest of the football league, with 11 positive results.

It means 4,038 players and staff were tested in total, with 123 found to have the virus, while 31 teams returned a clean bill of health.

United’s first-team squad all tested negative, but a member of support staff returned a positive result.

The U’s will be swabbed again today to complete the first round of twice-weekly testing, which began on Monday and is being funded by the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA).

All players and staff tested negative earlier in the week.
