BURTON Albion's new manager bounce saw Oxford United remain in the top half of the Sky Bet League One table.

The Brewers triumphed 1-0 at Gillingham in the first game of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's second spell in charge, after the Dutchman watched last weekend's 5-1 home defeat to the U's from the stands.

Victory would have put the Kent side 12th, leapfrogging United, but a first-half goal from debutant Hayden Carter secured a precious third win of the season for Burton.

Karl Robinson: free weekend will not change Oxford United team for Tuesday

Karl Robinson's side had a free weekend due to the postponement of their home game against Shrewsbury Town, but other results also went their way.

Crewe Alexandra and Sunderland, three and two places above United respectively, could only pick up a point from their matches.

David Artell's side drew 3-3 at Rochdale, while the Black Cats' clash with Hull City at the Stadium of Light ended 1-1.

Elsewhere, Michael Appleton's Lincoln City are four points clear at the top of the table after drawing 1-1 with Peterborough United at Sincil Bank, while Swindon Town won 3-2 at Ipswich Town.
