THE Horspath Feast fixture scheduled for next Monday has been cancelled.

It comes after the government’s introduction of new restrictions banning social gatherings of more than six people, as a measure against rising coronavirus cases.

The traditional end-of-season fixture, regarded by many as the social highlight of the Oxfordshire cricket calendar, features a game between Horspath and the President’s XI.

In a tweet, the club said: “It is with heavy hearts that we have cancelled the 2020 @horspathcricket Feast. With the new restrictions being announced, the health and safety of our members and guests is paramount to the club. We hope everyone understands and 2021 will be special.”

Horspath Feast Day also sees a funfair on the village green, but this had already been called off.

A statement from Horspath Parish Council read: “After careful consideration, Councillors made the decision to cancel the Fair based on advice given by Oxfordshire Public Health, Thames Valley Police and also the recent increase of positive cases in Oxford.

“This decision was made purely in the interest of public safety for the residents of Horspath village.

“We look forward to seeing the Fair return to the village in 2021.”
