A DEJECTED Karl Robinson admitted he lived the decisive moment which undid Oxford United at Wembley in slow motion.

Having seen his side draw level with Wycombe Wanderers via a slice of fortune from Mark Sykes, they looked like the team more likely to go on and win the Sky Bet League One play-off final.

But their Championship hopes went up in smoke with a breakdown in communication at the back.

Elliott Moore ducked a hopeful long ball forward, unaware the pacy Fred Onyedinma was lurking.

Simon Eastwood, who had made an error for the first goal, came out and clattered the forward, conceding a penalty which Joe Jacobson scored to make it 2-1 and claim promotion to the Championship.

“It’s not something I’ll want to run back in my mind,” Robinson said.

“It’s a moment that will live with me forever, it was almost in slow motion.

“The frustrating thing with the second goal is if Browney (Marcus Browne) doesn’t ask for a throw-in, he’s in on a one-on-one.

“He stopped running, it was one long ball and you know you’re always suspect to that against the opposition.

“It’s something we spoke about and we’ve been punished.

“Right now this is as low as it gets.”

It was a bitterly disappointing way to end what had been a magnificent season for United.

While they were contained well in the first period, the introduction of Liam Kelly at half-time helped swing the game their way.

But James Henry turned down a shooting chance in an attempt to set up Matty Taylor, while Rob Dickie had two good headed opportunities.

All three were kept out by some heroic last-ditch defending, but Robinson knew it was the key spell in the game.

Robinson said: “I’m extremely proud of them.

“We’ve been done very early on by a goal you’d expect to come from the opposition.

“I thought my players for 95 per cent of that game we probed, asked great questions, we played forward and showed tremendous bravery.

“But we missed some really key chances at important stages of the game.

“All the things that were out of our control didn’t fall for us.

“Wycombe have gone through, congratulations have to go to them.

“The mistakes we made were small errors and unfortunately it’s cost us.

“The game sometimes isn’t fair and today was certainly one of them.”

Robinson’s job is now to rebuild for another promotion challenge next season – and while defeat is raw now it is something he will use.

He said: “The reason we love this game is that it can hurt us.

“So when the good times come around we should embrace and enjoy them.

“Tonight we should never forget to motivate ourselves moving forward.”
