Ahead of each of United's games this season, we are looking back at memorable matches against their next opponents.

March 15, 2003: Shrewsbury Town 1, Oxford United 2

ANDY Woodman needed 48 stitches after suffering a horrific facial injury during Oxford United's win at Shrewsbury Town.

The U's goalkeeper was taken to hospital following the sickening clash with teammate Dave Waterman as they tried to block a shot in first-half stoppage time, with Jamie Tolley netting the hosts' equaliser from the rebound.

It meant right back Scott McNiven deputised between the posts for the entire second period in an incident-packed match.

Waterman had put United ahead in the 20th minute, with Jefferson Louis regaining the lead within 14 seconds of the restart.

There was even time for both sides to end the game with ten men, as home striker Luke Rodgers and U's man Bobby Ford were sent off late on.

But the visitors held on to climb to fifth in Division Three.

Ian Atkins's side created the better chances in the early exchanges and deservedly went ahead midway through the half.

Andy Crosby headed Ford's corner towards Lee Steele, but the striker could not get a shot away.

It did not matter, as Shrewsbury failed to clear and Waterman fired home his first league goal for the club.

The visitors appeared to be successfully seeing out the half, but they were hit by the double setback of Tolley's strike and Woodman's injury.

United did not let it affect them and stunned their opponents with a sensational start to the second period.

Steele took advantage of a sleeping Shrewsbury defence and played in Louis, who chipped the goalkeeper from 15 yards.

The forward almost hit his second when he struck the post, before Rodgers - who seconds earlier had been booked for diving - was given his marching orders for a late challenge on Matt Bound.

Ford's second yellow almost jeopardised a heroic U's display, but they claimed all three points.

Oxford United: Woodman, McNiven, Bound, Waterman, Robinson, Hunt (Whitehead), Crosby, Oldfield (Louis), Ford, Basham, Steele (Hunter).
