Ahead of each of United's games this season, we are looking back at memorable matches against their next opponents.

December 9, 1989: Newcastle United 2, Oxford United 3

OXFORD United produced an excellent all-round performance to claim an impressive three points at Newcastle United.

Ceri Evans, Jimmy Phillips and Paul Simpson were on target as Brian Horton’s side came away from St James’ Park with victory.

Evans was particularly outstanding in a defence that snuffed out the dangerous duo of Mick Quinn and Mark McGhee as the U’s did the double over Jim Smith’s side.

The New Zealander gave the visitors the lead, but his strike was cancelled out by Mark Stimson’s first goal for Newcastle.

A minute after the break United were back in front, Phillips (above) converting from the penalty spot after Mark Stein was brought down by home keeper John Burridge.

Simpson gave United breathing space as the home fans grew increasingly frustrated, before Quinn pulled a goal back.

Oxford Utd: Kee, Smart, J Phillips, Lewis, Foster, Evans, Heath, McClaren, Durnin, Stein, Simpson.
