JORDAN Archer loved every minute of his return to competitive action as the goalkeeper kept a clean sheet on his Oxford United debut.

The former Millwall stopper was rushed in on a short-term deal on Friday to cover Simon Eastwood’s injury.

Before Saturday’s clash with Shrewsbury Town there were concerns about rustiness in what was his first game since March.

But Archer looked assured in a relatively quiet afternoon during the goalless draw.

“I thoroughly enjoyed it,” he said.

“From the first minute seeing the boys play it was a privilege to be a part of.

“I don’t really get nervous and I’m quite confident in myself.

“There were a few butterflies because you want to impress, but I just tried to keep it simple and not force anything.

“A massive part of not playing for so long is the mental side of it. You can switch off, it can be a long 90 minutes so you just have to keep yourself in the game.”

A depleted United were unable to turn their control of the game into goals, but the 26-year-old was not concerned.

He said: “There will be times when the squad’s ravaged by injuries, but there will plenty of other boys who will step in.

“It’s just about trying to stay as consistent as you can.

“I know we wanted the three points, but looking back on it at the end of the season it could be a massive point.”
