OXFORD Hawks had a superb weekend with both first teams claiming big home wins.

A 5-1 success for the ladies over Cheltenham took them second in the Investec Conference West, while the men claimed their first victory in style – 8-1 against Fareham.

In the former, they made a fast start with Caro Harris and Tam Pascoe converting short corners to seize control.

Some fine defending from Bex Oakes kept the visitors out as they got on top before half-time.

Cheltenham twice hit the frame of the goal shortly after the break.

But the hosts hit back to kill the game off as Lexi Newall and Sam Jacobs struck, with Frankie Brown having the final say after Cheltenham’s consolation.

Alex Copestake starred with four goals for the men, who climbed three places in Division 1 South as they won at the sixth attempt.

Copestake opened the scoring from Jack Biggs’ pass, with the latter doubling the lead from a penalty corner.

The pair struck again to stretch the lead before half-time.

Ted Bennett finished a flowing move for the fifth goal, before a late flourish saw Copestake add another two either side of Matt Wood’s effort.

Fareham scored late on, but it did not take the edge off a fine display.

Witney Ladies stayed second in South League Division 1 with a 2-1 win at Spencer.

Helen Backhouse and Lucy Reading scored in the first half, but goalkeeper Emily Munsey was busy after the break to prevent the rejuvenated home side from claiming a point.

Oxford are also unbeaten and moved four points clear in Division 2 following a 2-0 win over visitors Epsom.

Amelia Baron and Milly Berndes-Cade were on target, while they also progressed in the Investec Women’s Tier 2 Trophy.

Laura Pickervance (2) and Maya Choudhury scored in a 3-0 success against Wootton Bassett.

Jamie Bloomfield’s brace helped stretch Oxford OBU’s winning streak to seven games in the men’s South League Premier Division 2 West.

Hector Lyons and Zum Akhter also scored in a 4-3 win at PHC Chiswick.

Jacob Deacon and James Youngman gave Witney a 2-1 victory at OMT in MBBO Regional 1.
