CHERYL Williams scored a hat-trick to fire Oxford United into the second round of the FA Women’s National League Plate.

Norwich City were hammered 8-1 at Court Place Farm, with Sophie Baker, Carly Johns, Brogan Moore, Immy Lancaster and Georgia Timms also finding the net.

It was just the response manager Liam Gilbert had wanted after a 2-1 loss to Gillingham in the previous game.

He said: “We’ve spoken a lot with the players over the last couple of weeks about where our bar is set and where our standards are and for me at times today we were well above that and that’s what they have the capability to do.

“It doesn’t matter who the opponent is, we know how we can play and how we can control games as long as we apply ourselves in the way we know we can.”

Baker opened the scoring on seven minutes and Williams quickly added her first of the afternoon.

Norwich responded through Millie Davis’s 30-yard lob, but from then on it was one-way traffic.

Williams converted a penalty and Johns made it 4-1 by the break.

The U’s had a ruthless streak in the second half, with Williams coolly completing her treble.

Moore, Timms and Lancaster struck in the closing stages.
