OXFORD United Women’s boss Liam Gilbert was critical of his side’s performance as they lost 2-1 at home to Gillingham Ladies.

The U’s had scored 27 goals in their previous three games, but were wasteful in the National League Southern Premier clash at Court Place Farm.

Georgia Timms did find the net late on, but it was too late to spark a revival.

Gilbert said: “I think we got what we deserved, we didn’t apply ourselves in the right way and it wasn’t what we expected as a collective and talking to the players afterwards they know that.

“We seem to get ourselves in these positions, get a good run of results and expect to win games and you can’t do that at this level.”

United, who used the game to raise money for local charity Against Breast Cancer, made most of the running in the first half.

Chances came and went, with Gills goalkeeper Cara Davies making three good saves to keep the game scoreless.

The Kent side went ahead via a free-kick early in the second half and doubled their advantage from the penalty spot.

Cheryl Williams hit the crossbar with a free-kick, before Davies was forced off with an injury ten minutes from time.

Ellie Jeffkins, who had scored one of the goals, took on the gloves and was beaten by Timms’s late penalty, but United could not find an equaliser.
