WEST Witney stunned Headington to win the Oxford & District League Cup final.

A 64-47 victory at Kidlington BC saw them lift the trophy for the first time after a superb show.

Headington had won the competition in eight of the past nine years and were hot favourites.

They started strongly, leading by nine shots and on three of the four rinks after five ends.

However, Witney fought back and were narrowly in front after ten.

The turning point came with just just six ends to go when Shane Cooper and Kev Alder’s rinks both picked up five shots apiece on crucial ends.

Despite Headington finishing the game with two winning rinks, Witney’s late surge brought them a comfortable victory to see them home by 17 shots overall.

Victorious skipper Andy McIntyre could not hide his delight.

“It’s been a great year for the club, winning the Hawker Cup and League Cup for the first time,” he said.

“I’m particularly grateful for the five players who travelled all the way back from Bournemouth (from a club tour) for the final.

“I know they will have enjoyed celebrating their journey back to the coast.”
