CAMERON Brannagan backed Ben Woodburn to put away his next chance after the teenager’s glaring miss against Peterborough United.

The Liverpool loanee blazed over from close range after James Henry’s chip hit the crossbar.

It would have given Oxford United a 2-0 cushion, but to Woodburn’s relief it did not prove costly as the home side saw out the game as 1-0 winners.

The miss took the edge off what had been an excellent performance on his home debut – and he shrugged it off well to force a smart save late on.

But Brannagan, whose goal won the game, was quick to have a word with his new housemate.

“I told him ‘this is serious, those chances have got to go in the net’,” he said.

“Ben knows that. You’ll miss chances of course and he was gutted.

“I just said ‘the next one you’ve got to put away’. Ben’s living with me now so I’m looking after him and he’s a top kid.”

Brannagan hit six goals for the U’s last season and credited midfield partner Alex Gorrin for giving him the freedom to get into the box more.

He said: “He always tell me I’ll be behind you, you get forward.

“To get that security behind you feels good. I feel safe about getting forward and not worrying too much about what’s behind me.

“I always get back, no matter what, but he’s a good player.”
