SECOND-HALF goals from Gavin Whyte and Rob Hall gave Oxford United their second pre-season victory in as many evenings.

Just as he had against Oxford City on Tuesday, Whyte found the net from the penalty spot.

That came 48 minutes into a contest the Sky Bet League One side had controlled without finding a way past Thame’s rearguard.

Hall’s quality finish was the highlight of a game which got feisty at times in the second half as the home side battled hard in front of a decent crowd at the ASM Stadium.

United’s only concern was a hamstring problem which forced Tariqe Fosu off, but it was not serious and the rest of their squad will go on to face Brackley Town tomorrow night.

Jon Guthrie was given another chance to impress, while United’s starting line-up included a second trialist in the form of winger Elliott Frear.

The 28-year-old, who was at Motherwell last season, had two big chances to make an impression either side of the half-hour mark.

Both were laid on by Alex Rodriguez Gorrin, but after rounding goalkeeper Craig Hill he fired wide.

Frear found the net confidently six minutes later, only to look up and see an offside flag.

In between those chances Dan West headed Thame’s best chance over from a corner, while Fosu was withdrawn after feeling tightness in his hamstrings.

His replacement was Aaron Heap and the midfielder was instrumental in the visitors breaking the deadlock from the penalty spot three minutes into the second half.

After Heap was fouled, Whyte stepped up to calmly convert his second spot kick in 24 hours.

As planned, United changed their entire outfield side just before the hour mark.

James Henry had a header saved within seconds, but the visitors had to wait until 11 minutes from time to double their advantage.

It came via a terrific finish from Hall, who showed great composure with his finish after driving into the box.
