KARL Robinson says his Oxford United players will relish the task of taking on Glasgow Rangers at Ibrox this weekend.

The U’s kick-off their pre-season games with a mouth-watering fixture at the Scottish giants tomorrow.

They will be backed by a bumper away following of more than 1,000, who have not been deterred by the 770-mile round trip.

United would normally face local non-league sides at the start of pre-season, but boss Robinson is hoping to create momentum with a big game early on.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge,” he said.

“It’s going to be incredibly difficult with some of the world-class players they’ve got.

“But it’s great for our players and we’re expecting a big crowd.

“Normally you get your local games out the way, but we took this on mainly because we wanted something for the fans to get excited about as well.

“I think taking over a thousand people to an away game this early on, so far away, is brilliant.”

Robinson added: “It’s a great day out, a fantastic city, and the fans can enjoy the public houses and the activities that Glasgow gives them.

“We’ll look forward to the game. It’s a great place to play and it’s fantastic for the players.”

United have never faced Rangers in a competitive fixture, although it is difficult to know how strong a side they will be up against.

Steven Gerrard could use it as an opportunity to give his players game time ahead of their Europa League first qualifying round tie against St Joseph’s on July 9.

But regardless of who turns out for Rangers, Robinson is urging his side to relish the opportunity.

“There should be excitement, even for us staff,” he said.

“I’ve been lucky to participate in games at every ground in the country and that’s something you can be very proud of, but never in Scotland.

“So it will be nice to go to one of the most iconic stadiums and teams in world football.”
