To mark Oxford United’s 125th season, we are looking back at what made the news this week in three of the club's promotion-winning campaigns

1965

OXFORD United took advantage of rivals slipping up by earning an epic 4-2 win at Tranmere Rovers which gave them a wonderful chance for promotion.

The result ended Tranmere’s unbeaten home record in Division Four and saw them climb back into fourth place as York and Brighton lost, while Bradford, Rochdale and Millwall drew.

Tony Jones netted a brace, which was sandwiched by Mick Morris’s header and John Fahy’s strike.

1985

OXFORD United tore Oldham Athletic apart to win 5-2 at the Manor Ground to move within one step of promotion to Division One.

John Aldridge was the architect with a hat-trick, but Abingdon’s Mark Jones was also influential, setting up United’s first two goals.

Kevin Brock and Bobby McDonald were also on target for Jim Smith’s men.

1996

OXFORD United’s promotion bid looked like it was going down to the wire after David Rush and Paul Moody’s goals earned a 2-0 win at Bristol City.

And with Swindon Town clinching promotion by holding Blackpool 1-1, it left the U’s five points behind the Tangerines with a game in hand.

“It looks like going down to the last game of the season,” said assistant boss Malcolm Crosby.

“And if it does we’ll settle for that.”
