To mark Oxford United’s 125th season, we are looking back at what made the news this week in three of the club's promotion-winning campaigns

1965

OXFORD United demolished Wrexham 4-0 at a rain-soaked Manor Ground with a performance full of power and artistry.

The victory took them up to fourth position in Division Four, with a better goal average than most of their closest rivals.

Conditions were not easy, but the U’s revelled in it.

John Fahy got the opening goal, before Tony Jones hit a hat-trick to complete a comfortable win.

1985

OXFORD United moved to the brink of promotion following a 2-1 success at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Goals from Gary Briggs and Kevin Brock claimed a fifth win in six outings and moved them four points clear with two games in hand.

Boss Jim Smith thought one more win could finish the job.

He said: “The way other teams are playing, 73 points could clinch it for us, but we won’t stop there –we want to win the championship.”

1996

OXFORD United’s players took time out of the promotion race to recharge their batteries with a short break in Torquay.

Manager Denis Smith took his players away for a golfing trip on the Devon coast when their scheduled game against Shrewsbury Town was put back.

The postponement was forced by their opponents’ involvement in the Auto Windscreens Shield.

“The inactivity was forced, so I had to think what would the best thing be for the players,” Smith said.

“Hopefully the break will have done them good. Time will tell.”
