JAMES Henry is enjoying his new position – and believes it is also helping another of Oxford United midfielders thrive.

Much of the attention on the switch to a three-man midfield has focused on John Mousinho’s move from centre half into a screening role in front of the back four.

But Henry has also adapted, operating more centrally and deeper than he had typically done during the rest of his time with the club.

The 29-year-old jumped at the chance to add his experience to the heart of the U’s side, which has given Cameron Brannagan far more freedom.

It has seen the former Liverpool apprentice, who netted once in his first 30 appearances for United, score twice in the last three games.

Henry said: “I’ve been moved into central midfield and I think I’ve taken to it quite quickly.

“It was a natural move for me at this time. I’m enjoying it.

“I think it’s definitely helped Cameron a little bit to get forward more.

“Having myself and Mous in there, we are a little bit more senior and recognise that when (Brannagan) goes forward someone has to stay.

“I think through the season we have generally had quite a young midfield until these last six games and I think sometimes it showed.

“If we can get goals coming from all over the pitch it’s a benefit and Cam has stepped up and added a few goals and assists to his game, which is great.”

The reshaped midfield has helped United build a six-game unbeaten run in Sky Bet League One, but heading into tomorrow’s home game with Gillingham, they remain 21st.

Henry said: “We’re under no false illusions, we’re still in the bottom four.

“It’s given us confidence more than anything.

“The last six games have been a good start, but that’s all it is – a platform to build on.”
