OXFORD Harlequins’s hard work paid off after a successful official opening at Horspath Sports Ground.

The RFU-funded artificial pitch was unveiled, with only the wet weather dampening spirits.

But Quins, who are custodians of the community facility, put on a show.

While more than 100 people enjoyed a pre-match lunch, the first XV ran in six tries to beat Wimborne 37-5 and the second team overcame Beaconsfield 2nd 35-24 on an adjacent pitch.

“It was really good,” said Quins chairman Neil Hopper.

“It was massively attended, we had 120 for lunch, the bar was packed afterwards and we had two wins as well.”

Quins moved into their new home in May and have been refurbishing the changing rooms and clubhouse.

Hopper said: “Everyone was impressed by it.

“They all noted the work that had gone in from when we picked it up 12 weeks ago.

“The bar was finished at 11.15 and we opened at 11.30, we had chippies in at 7am to finish it off, so it was that close and the pitch capped it all off.”

As the host, Quins receive 12 hours free use of the community asset at peak time, with the remainder managed by the RFU.
