BICESTER’S Millie Couzens became a national champion when she won a gold medal in the School Games Finals at Loughborough University.

The 14-year-old Bicester School pupil, a member of the England Central team, won the road race and came third in the elimination competition.

On the first day, Couzens rode a smart race to stay in contention and bag bronze in the elimination final.

The second day of action featured street sprints on the Loughborough campus before Couzens’ moment of glory in the road race.

Taking place on the lanes of south Leicestershire, the bumpy circuit really tested the riders but Couzens was more than up to the challenge as the lead group was gradually whittled down.

Attacking on the final circuit, Couzens managed to break clear of her rivals and stormed to victory, crossing the line with arms aloft.

After her victory, she said: “I’ve loved every minute of it and I’m just super happy.

“The opening ceremony was also pretty special and there was such a great atmosphere. I couldn’t have asked for much more.”
