BICESTER Golf & Country Club professional Peter Thompson and his amateur partner David Shields have a chance of winning Europe’s biggest proam when they compete in the final of the Lombard Trophy in sunny Portugal next week.
The Bicester duo will go head-to-head with 14 other clubs in the 36-hole showdown in the Algarve in the PGA National Pro-Am Championship, which reaches its climax at the Vila Sol Golf & Resort Hotel on September 21-22.
They clinched their spot in Portugal by winning their regional qualifier on countback at Camberley Heath, after shooting an 11-under-par 60.
Shields, 49, who works as a prison officer, said: “I can’t wait to get to Portugal now.
“I’ve never played in anything like this before.”
Thompson added: “I’ve played Vila Sol a few times.
Hopefully, a bit of background knowledge will help.”
