Kemar Roofe struck twice as Oxford United all but ended any remaining relegation concerns with a terrific Good Friday display at Wycombe Wanderers.

Clinical up front and well organised at the back, the visitors hassled the high-flying Chairboys out of their stride to inflict only their third defeat since mid-November.

Roofe, who had scored just once before in his entire career, turned in Danny Rose's cross to open the scoring.

The West Brom loanee then turned provider for Rose to make it 2-0 on 22 minutes. Paul Hayes pulled a goal back early in the second half, but on the hour Roofe doubled his tally.

The two-goal cushion was required, with Aaron Holloway making it 3-2 at the death.

United

United negotiated a nervy finish, but stood firm to seal back-to-back wins for the first time since November and extend their points advantage over the bottom two into double figures.

The atmosphere crackled before kick-off and the game began at breakneck speed.

In the second minute Ryan Clarke needed to make a smart save, turning a firm header from Hayes round the post.

An unchanged United immediately looked a threat too, and only a terrific tackle from Joe Jacobson denied Roofe from getting a shot away after a sensational 50-yard dribble.

He did not have long to wait for his next chance, which came on 11 minutes.

Rose burst down the left and slid a low cross which Roofe buried past Wycombe goalkeeper Matt Ingram to open the scoring.

The travelling fans exploded with delight - and they were still singing when United doubled their advantage midway through the half.

The same two players did the damage, but this time the roles were reversed. Roofe sprinted down the right and pulled back a cross which was superbly finished by Rose.

United had shown a clinical edge which they had rarely showed this season, but the lead owed much to the way they had harassed Wycombe.

The title hopefuls were pressured on the ball and squeezed for space, prompting a host of errors on the ball.

Despite United defending well, backed up by Clarke, Wycombe carved out two good chances before the break.

Sam Wood rolled a shot just past the post, while Aaron Pierre nodded wide on the stroke of half-time. The game reignited immediately after the break.

Danny Hylton sprung the offside trap to streak clear, only to delay and have his cross blocked from a wide position.

United's top scorer forced Ingram into a save with the next attack, before Wycombe found a foothold in the game.

Veteran poacher Hayes added another to his collection, prodding in after Alfie Mawson headed Sam Saunders's centre across goal.

Wycombe had their tails up, but United continued to cause problems up front.

Hylton was denied by an Ingram block when he should have scored from a Rose cross on 55 minutes.

The forward made amends on the hour, collecting a clever Rose pass and pulling back for Roofe to sweep a shot into the far corner of the net.

It gave United precious breathing space and despite three quick substitutions Wycombe did not cause them problems until the closing stages.

One of those to come off the bench, Holloway, set up a grandstand finish when he slid in at the back post to score late on.

United had to negotiate a tense six minutes of stoppage time, but held on to claim a memorable victory.
