A Grade II-listed building at the heart of Bicester town centre could undergo a programme of conservation and repair works aimed at preserving its historic character while addressing long-standing maintenance issues.

Plans have been submitted to Cherwell District Council for remedial repairs at Nationwide Building Society's branch in the Market Square.

The building, which dates back to the late 17th and early 18th centuries, sits within the Bicester Town Centre Conservation Area and has been Grade II listed since 1970.

According to the application, surveys found a range of problems linked to water ingress, damp, weathering and previous repairs. The proposed works are intended to halt further deterioration and secure the building's long-term future.

The repairs would include work to timber sash windows, render, rainwater goods, roof coverings and leadwork. Inappropriate cement-based pointing would also be removed and replaced with traditional lime mortar to improve the building's ability to breathe.

Internally, damp-damaged plaster would be removed and replaced with breathable materials, while areas affected by previous water penetration would be repaired and redecorated. Stair coverings would also be renewed and new non-slip nosings installed to improve safety.

The design and access statement says the proposals have been developed using a "repair before replacement" approach, with existing historic materials retained wherever possible.

The design and access statement said: "The proposal is therefore considered to preserve the special architectural and historic interest of the Grade II listed building and the character and appearance of the Bicester Town Centre Conservation Area, while delivering necessary maintenance that will help secure the building's long-term conservation and continued use."
