Oxfordshire drivers face A34 closure during roadworks

National Highways has proposed extending existing overnight restrictions to allow a complete closure of the road and slip roads.

The closure is expected to begin at 9pm on Friday, October 2 and continue until 6am on Monday, October 5.

If the work is postponed, contingency dates begin on October 23.

Drivers affected by the closure will be diverted along the A4130 and A4185. Signs will be placed on the roads when the restrictions are operating.

The temporary order is due to come into force on September 27.

National Highways said the restrictions are needed for road safety while contractors resurface the carriageway to match lay-by alterations and complete associated work.

In Islip, closures are planned from September 28 to November 20 for traffic signal installation and carriageway and footway improvements.

Restrictions will affect King’s Head Lane between Mill Street and Middle Street; Lower Street between Wheatley Road and Mendota House; Mill Street between The Walk and Wheatley Road; The Walk between Mill Street and High Street; and the B4027 Wheatley Road between Mill Street and Hillside Cottage.

An alternative route will be signed locally. Exemptions will apply to emergency services, contractors and properties that can only be reached from a closed section.

Oxford will also see closures for micro asphalt work by ODS Group from October 19.

Cranley Road will be closed until October 31, while Claymond Road, Humfrey Road, Routh Road and Iffley Road are expected to close until October 23.

Access will be maintained for emergency vehicles and properties where reasonably practicable. Suggested routes include Waynflete Road, Humfrey Road and local diversions.

Other utility and highway works will affect roads across the county. Old Road in Wheatley is due to close from September 28 until December 21 for water mains replacement.

High Street, Church Street and White Road in East Hendred are also due to close from September 28 until February 8, 2027, for water mains work.

Coxwell Road and the A420 link road at Great Coxwell are closed while the carriageway is widened and a signal-controlled junction is built.

The order is expected to remain until April 16, 2027. Traffic will be diverted through the A420, London Street, Coxwell Street and Coxwell Road.

Highworth Road in Faringdon will close overnight from 8pm on September 14 until 6am on September 19 for drainage cleaning and CCTV surveys. A diversion has been listed through Coleshill, Eastrop, Lechlade and Faringdon.

In Abingdon, the Elizabeth Avenue footpath is due to close from September 21 for about four weeks during gas main maintenance.

Foxborough Road in Radley is scheduled for closure from April 12, 2027, until August 13, 2028, for gas replacement works.

Special events will bring further restrictions. Woodstock’s street fair will close Market Street, Market Place, High Street and Park Street from 10am on October 4 until 3am on October 7. Parking restrictions will also apply in several streets.

Abingdon Michaelmas Fair will impose restrictions from 7am on October 4 until 9am on October 7. Market Place, High Street, The Square and part of West St Helen Street will be closed. Ock Street and Stratton Way will have daily closures between noon and midnight, with access allowed at other times.

Cherwell District Council will change parking charges in Banbury and Bicester from September 28.

Long-stay charges will rise to £1.60 for one hour and £7.50 for a day until 6pm. Sunday and bank holiday charges will be £1.60 for one hour and £2.20 thereafter. Disabled badge holders will continue to park free within permitted stays.
