A suspected drink driver was arrested following a three-vehicle crash on one of Newtown’s busiest roads earlier this week.

The 39-year-old man was allegedly involved in a collision which partially closed a section of New Road near the junction to Park Street at around 6.20pm on Wednesday, May 1.

Police confirmed that there were no injuries reported.

Pictures shared online of the crash show a black Peugeot 107 and a Honda SUV had been shunted from behind with extensive damage to the rear of the vehicles. A third vehicle was reported to have left the scene.

A local resident described hearing a "really loud bang" then a wheel spin and "high revving" following the crash.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of a three-vehicle road traffic collision on Park Lane, Newtown at around 6.20pm on Wednesday, May 1.

“One man, aged 39, has been arrested on suspicion of drink drive and has been released under investigation.

“No injuries were reported.”

A section of the road was blocked off by police officers while they took witness statements and waited for the vehicles to be recovered from the scene.

Traffic flowing from Llanidloes Road was redirected along Park Street while motorists travelling along New Road were being allowed through by police officers.

Shortly after 7.30pm, both lanes along New Road were reopened after one of the vehicles was removed.
