A small but successful village shop near Wallingford could be demolished and relocated under newly submitted plans.

The Community Shop in South Stoke, which started trading in March 2013, serves a population of just over 500 villagers seven days a week

Volunteer-led and not-for-profit, it was named the ‘best volunteer organisation’ in Oxford in 2018 by Oxfordshire County Council and Volunteer Action.

But new plans by the parish council would see the shop, which operates out of a temporary building in the village recreation ground, demolished and relocated to permanent premises inside a proposed community building known as ‘The Hub’.

The new building would also serve as a meeting place and feature a cafe.

Extensive consultation has been carried out with the villagers over the proposed community hub, which the council claim will have ‘very little visual impact’ on the surrounding countryside due to shielding from nearby houses.

The council's application to South Oxfordshire District Council is under public consultation with a target decision date of July 17.
