With King Charles’ coronation fast approaching, Oxford householders don’t have long to apply to host a street party.

King Charles III’s coronation is taking place at Westminster Abbey on May 6 and Oxford householders have until 5pm on Friday, April 7, to apply to host a street party.

Oxford City Council has decided to waive the road closure charge to encourage residents and community groups to hold street parties across the Bank Holiday weekend, which will fall between Saturday, May 6, and Monday, May 8.

The charge for small community events is normally £16, although charges for large events and those selling alcohol over the coronation weekend will remain in place.

The Lord Mayor of Oxford James Fry said: “The coronation of a new monarch will, for many of us, be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and there’s no better way of celebrating the occasion than sharing food and drink with friends and neighbours.

“We have tried to make the process of organising a street party, including the closure of the road, as simple as possible, so please do get in touch and we will try to help make sure you have everything you need to celebrate this historic occasion.”

Those interested in holding a street party will need to send an application form off and email the city council’s licensing team.

Buckingham Palace is encouraging people across the country to hold street parties as part of the Coronation Big Lunch on Sunday, May 7.
