Extreme delays of up to one hour in the city at rush hour have led to reports of bus passengers being asked to hop off.

Motorists are being held up in both directions along Cowley Road from The Plain to Hollow Way this afternoon (Friday, March 24).

One Oxford man, David Brimson, said a bus was emptied after being stuck near The Original Swan in Cowley.

Mr Brimson told the Oxford Mail: "My daughter and the passengers on the bus took so long they were asked to get off.

"Apparently the driver had gone over his hours. They were stuck by The Swan in Cowley. Let's see what happens when Botley Road is closed."

Oxford Mail:

It is understood the delays are being caused by temporary traffic lights by Magdalen Road near the Christian Life Centre.

Oxford Bus Company stated the lights "appear to be automated and unmanned, resulting in major delays".

The company had earlier stated: "We are currently facing delays of up to 60 minutes along Cowley Road.

"This appears to be due to congestion. As we find out more updates will follow.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Oxfordshire County Council also warned drivers to find an alternative route where possible.

And the AA has been reporting average speeds of five mph in the area.

Inrix, which provides traffic analysis, said motorists have been moving "very slowly".
